Old Pals at Hillside
Helena has lived in Norfolk for 50 years now, although originally from Bromley in Kent. Along with her husband, Barry, she managed a large Hotel in Kings Lynn for 20 years and then the Gaywood Art Centre and Gallery Coffee Shop for a further 15 years, until she retired.
Now living in Snettisham, and lucky enough to have a Garden Studio, she keeps very busy painting portraits of people, animals and places and she spends a lot of time trying to get a “likeness” of her subject, and capture the character.
To counteract the highly detailed work of a portrait, she loves to paint on silk. This medium is a challenge in a different way, because the silk and the paint have a mind of their own, and are harder to control. But the results are joyful and colourful and much looser.
Helena also enjoys cleaning and restoring old and grimy oil paintings. These often appear from attics where they have been long forgotten, someone has put a foot through them, or used them as a dart board. She finds great satisfaction in cleaning and mending them and seeing the original colours appearing. She also restores the frames and re-guilds them.
Helena enjoys living on the coast now, and is a frequent visitor to Titchwell bird reserve, Pensthorpe and Welney and is so often inspired by the nature of the local area.
