Born in Norfolk, I spent my working life as a scientist based in the South East. Retirement brought a permanent move back to Norfolk – and for me the need for a completely new challenge. Without even an ‘O level’ in art I decided to try watercolour painting. Its delicacy had always appealed and in 2013 I enrolled for 2 terms at Ian King’s ‘beginner’s watercolour classes’. I was ‘hooked’ – myriads of techniques, papers, paints, brushes, pen and wash – all to test one’s patience.
I have recently started to experiment with pastels – in my hands a very messy medium! Many different effects from those which can be achieved with watercolour – but again, a fresh challenge.
The very things which made us return to Norfolk - open landscapes, wonderful birdlife and fascinating buildings influence my subject matter. I have met so many interesting people through my new venture and what a fabulous hobby for one’s retirement!
