Introduction to felt landscapes with Christa Hirsch

Participants will be introduced to the art of felt-making in this beginner’s course. We will be looking at landscapes from around the world and using felt to create a miniature tapestry that focuses on the colours, textures and layers of the land. Participants may bring in a photo of a landscape to inspire them, or choose from those that will be provided. Felting is a very tactile and dynamic process that doesn’t demand strong art skills, only a strong back and arms for the rolling process.

Christa Hirsch leads a busy life as a high school art teacher in King’s Lynn, teaching all years and running an after-school club. Her work is eclectic and she loves to mix photography, painting, drawing, printmaking and textiles all together. Christa graduated from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada with a Degree in Fine Art and is happily exploring the world before she decides to settle.

'Art from the garden' in acrylics, with Sandra Rowney

This workshop will focus on the use of colour and texture using acrylic paints. We will be using our gardens as source material so participants are asked to bring along a small handful of leaves, flowers or objects chosen especially for their interesting colours and textures. During the workshop we’ll explore a range of textural techniques using acrylic paint on paper or canvas and try out different ways of mixing and using colour. The workshop is suitable for both beginners to try their hand with acrylics and more experienced artists who would enjoy experimenting.

Sandra Rowney is an experienced teacher and artist based in Norwich. Sandra is currently Artist-in–Residence at the Walled Garden in Holkham Hall and is working on a new collection of acrylic paintings for her autumn show there based on the interiors of the greenhouses. Sandra has a Masters degree in Art and Education from NUCA, a busy studio and a full exhibition schedule.
