Natural history training, including watercolour botanical studies with the Byron School of Art in Dorset and further studies at the Bournemouth and Poole College, is the bedrock of Joan’s current impressionist garden scenes and textured floral work. She now creates contemporary free expression of basic floral forms, using textured, layered acrylic paints enhanced by beads, seeds, metallic powders and silk gutta. Mostly on canvas of varying shapes and sizes from 80x20 to 36x24 inches.
Her other love derives from spiritual studies and can often be connected to religious themes or visits to cathedrals and churches. Currently, since moving to Norfolk, Joan is working on a series of sketches and paintings of local medieval churches both in watercolour and oils.
In addition to her own work, Joan teaches drawing and watercolour techniques at all day monthly workshops in her village of Coltishall and exhibits her work in a number of galleries in Norfolk.
