2010 Annual Summer Exhibition
Our 9th annual Summer Exhibition took place at the end of July, as part of the King's Lynn Festival. Held, as always, in St Nicholas Chapel, the exhibition was our largest ever, to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Association.
Seventy-four members entered around 250 works for the exhibition, from which 120 were selected and displayed in the Chapel. In addition to paintings, there were sculptures, wood and stone carvings, photographs, tapestry and constructions, all of which represented the diverse nature of WNAA members' work!
Visitor numbers were at an all-time high and quite a few works were sold, along with many artists' greetings cards and prints. The official opening by the Cllr Zipha Christopher, the Mayor of King's Lynn saw the chapel crowded with member artists, their friends, family and clients, some of whom went on to the hog roast organised by the Friends of St Nicholas Chapel.
In our anniversary year the WNAA received welcome support for this exhibition from the Norfolk County Council Arts Project Fund. We were also generously sponsored with two purchase prizes, donated by Fleet Timber Supplies Ltd. and the Lifeboat Inn, Thornham. This meant that we had help with the considerable costs of the exhibition, and extra awards for the participating artists.
Selection of works this year was carried out by Mary Crofts, Jill North and Sandra Walmsley, who faced the difficult task of choosing the works that, together as a body, best represented the Association. In addition our thanks must go to the team who organised and set-up the exhibition, as without the behind-the-scenes work, these events simply could not happen.
The annual Syd Davison award for Best In Show was won by John Walker, who received an engraved glass trophy, presented by Joyce Davison. Winner of the Visitors' Choice award for most popular work in the show was Anne Roberts, for her painting "Green Moment in the Walks" who will receive a £50 cheque from the WNAA. To mark the anniversary, the WNAA Committee members selected a special 10th Anniversary Award, which went to Andrew Williams.
The two new purchase prizes were a much appreciated addition to the exhibition. The Fleet Timber Supplies Award was won by Angelina Berry, although Adrian Rix from that company generously purchased two additional works as well. Very appropriately, the Lifeboat Inn Award went to Peter Edwards for his painting "Rough Seas".
You can see some pictures from the exhibition further down this page. Most people seemed to agree that this exhibition was one of our best ever, and in 2011 we will strive to improve still further!
A 2011 calendar to celebrate our 10th anniversary
To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Association, the WNAA 2011 calendar is now available and it looks stunning, thanks to the efforts of calendar-meister Jo Halpin Jones who has worked long and hard at the design. Thanks to Jo’s skills and to the quality images submitted by members, every month is a revelation.
The calendar is for sale to members for £8.50 and the public at £10, both prices including a protective envelope. Why not buy a few as special gifts for your friends and family! Those who have a work featured in the calendar are entitled to one copy free, which you can collect at any WNAA events. The calendar will be available to buy at future ArtExchange meetings, but supplies are limited. To order a calendar contact Jo Halpin Jones.
