Gerald Marsland is an oil painter who turned professional in 2002. Gerald is self-taught and his work is traditional in style. Gerald first found critical acclaim when he was awarded 'Best Painting' at the 2004 Eastern Open. This achievement was quickly followed when he won the award for 'Most Popular Picture' at the 2005 Eastern Open. In 2010, Gerald also won the 'Most Popular Painting' award at the South Holland Open Arts Competition, an award voted for by the visiting public. Professor Graham Crowley, Professor of Painting, Royal College of Art, London (1998-2006) wrote of his work:-
“Some of the most fascinating developments in recent British Art have not looked like 'Modern' or state approved art. In fact the very notion of the 'modern' has been called into question. Gerald Marsland's paintings reflect this tendency. Gerald's paintings seem familiar and they should; they are paintings of the landscape. Gerald's achievement is to make landscape paintings that attempt to address and overcome this familiarity. He does this by painting pictures that are both intense and compelling. The paintings are accessible and resonant. They do what landscape painting has done for centuries, force us to reflect on our place.”
Gerald does take commission work. All the paintings shown on this page are for sale.
