Artist's Statement

After retiring from a career in Interior Design with many commissions in the UK, USA and Spain finding a creative outlet was essential. While visiting my daughter in Colorado I was inspired by a local artist whose work I still adore and began taking painting classes when I returned to Spain with Caroline Hulse FRSA at Studio 61 in Marbella and loved every minute. Although I had painted on silk successfully while living in South America some years earlier oils were completely new to me.

Colour has always played a huge role in my design work and does now in my paintings. Having lived in a number of very colourful and semi-tropical locations during my life I cannot resist painting with a strong colour palette and love to recreate exotic flowers and beach scenes. I enjoy incorporating gold, silver or copper leaf into my work on occasion for a touch of something a little bit different.

Having returned to my Norfolk home a few years ago I am now inspired by the beauty of our incredible countryside especially in the summer months with its golden fields and red poppies, the beautiful gardens which are so abundant and of course our magnificent unspoilt beaches.

Painting is such a learning curve. There is always a new avenue to explore, something different to inspire a new approach, a new artist to study, workshops and classes which can teach us so much. We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world where we never lack another subject to paint and there are so many wonderful artists to discover and exhibitions to enjoy.
